CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) ? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has assigned a coordinator to oversee the shutdown of the Hovensa oil refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The EPA said in a statement Thursday that it has assigned a community involvement coordinator to St. Croix, where residents have long complained about pollution problems.
Hovensa announced its closure in January after reporting a $1.3 billion loss in recent years because of weak demand and high operating costs.
The refinery was a joint venture of U.S.-based Hess Corp. and Venezuela's state-owned oil company. It will continue to operate as an oil storage facility.
