Teacher dies trying to save student in Lake Erie

By msnbc.com staff

CLEVELAND -- An Ohio teacher who died after trying to save a 9-year-old student from Lake Erie rip currents is being remembered for her selflessness as investigators try to determine why children on a school beach outing were in the water before lifeguards were on duty.

Laura Recco, 46, of Seven Hills dove into the water about 10:30 a.m. Monday when she saw two students, including Diamond Harris, 9, being pulled under at Bay Village?s Huntington Beach, about 10 miles west of Cleveland, according to reports.

Recco pulled one student out but when she went back for Harris, currents and waves up to 6 feet pulled her under, too, the Morning Journal newspaper of Lorain reported.

"The way she died is the perfect display of how selfless she was," Angelica Gagliardi, the older of Recco?s two daughters, tearfully told WEWS of Cleveland.

Although Cleveland Metroparks lifeguards weren?t due on duty until 11 a.m., Christian Pesarchick, 19, of Avon Lake was setting up and jumped in to try to save Recco and Harris, but he got into trouble in the water, too, NBC station WKYC of Cleveland reported.

About a half-dozen other lifeguards and passerby Clint Kranes, an Elyria resident and Navy veteran, and another teacher eventually pulled all three out of the water, WKYC reported.

The three were sent to St. John Medical Center. Pesarchick was released Monday. Harris was transferred to Rainbow Babies and Children?s Hospital and was released Tuesday, the Morning Journal newspaper of Lorain reported.

Recco died Wednesday morning, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner?s Office said.

She was one of four teachers who came with Harris and four other students on the annual?beach outing for the private nonprofit Positive Education Program, which serves 2,500 Cleveland-area children with special learning needs, WKYC reported.

Why some children and adults ventured into the water before the beach was officially open?and with dangerous conditions on the lake is being investigated by both Metroparks Rangers and by the Positive Education Program, WKYC reported.

Gagliardi described her mother to the Morning Journal:??Best teacher. Best mother. Best grandmother. Best friend. None of those things even touch the surface of the woman my mom was and the woman my mom raised me to become. She was strong and respected and put everyone else before herself.?

PEP would not comment to msnbc.com or other news organizations.

On Wednesday it issued a statement: ?Laura was one of our very finest teachers. Uniquely skilled at helping children build competencies, she was committed to helping every child know some joy in each day. She was deeply respected by her peers and was honored as PEP Hopewell?s Teacher-Counselor of the Year in 2006.?

The?veteran teacher also leaves behind her husband, Frank.

You Can Find Out About Home Businesses On The Web

Becoming successful at a home-based business is not everybody?s fortune, but you should not let that keep you from giving it a try. This is especially true now, when at an insignificant cost you can set up any of a variety of home-based businesses with a computer. The barriers are low: a high speed internet connection which is inexpensive these days, plus a little dedication to get the essential research completed. A computer-based business has a global reach with unlimited consumers, whereas a brick and mortar business is limited to local custom and has costly set-up expenses. Everyone in the world with an internet connection is a potential client.

There are lots of opportunities you might be thinking about trying, if you are seriously interested in giving a web based business a shot. It is very helpful if you know your way around a computer, but you most certainly don?t have to be a computer fundi to be able to get going. Instead of technical skills, what is a lot more important for success online is your level of knowledge regarding something that you enjoy doing. As an example this, those who are proficient at creative writing could think about a web-based copywriting business. As they say, content is king, so people with writing skills can readily become freelance writers for those who aren?t any good at writing. All you have to do is find people who have a need, such as content, and supply it for them. Put together a collection of your work, do a little marketing, and, hey presto! you?ve got a business. All you have to do, is figure out a price for your product, list it available for sale, and then wait until a buyer chooses your product. Once the buyer makes the purchase, you?ll receive the payment and then complete the purchase by sending the buyer their product. Pregnancy Without Pounds review

Skrillex Is Writing Music For Harmony Korine's 'Spring Breakers ...

If you're asking "What's a Skrillex?" chances are you're not in high school. If you haven't heard his music -- yes, he's an electronic musician -- you might recognize his face or perhaps his mad sweep of hair that flops over the shaved side of his head. Either way, the guy won three Grammys last year and is on every kid's iPhone or Android or whatever they carry around these days. And now he's making the leap to scoring movies, and it's on a project that's already pretty far out there.

Speaking with Pitchfork, frequent Wes Anderson collaborator, music supervisor Randall Poster (who has also worked on "The Hangover," "Boardwalk Empire," "The Vow," "Whip It" and many more) revealed that he's currently working on Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" and Skrillex is along for the ride.

"I'm accustomed to being the oldest person at a gig, but when I went to see Skrillex at Roseland this year, it was dramatic. There were a lot of kids that looked like they were 15 years old. But I loved it. I truly loved it. I think Skrillex is just brilliant. When I walked into that club, I felt like I swallowed the music-- it was like 'Alien,' like it went into me," he said about first hearing the EDM artist. "I'm working on Harmony Korine's movie 'Spring Breakers' now, and Skrillex is doing original music for us. I had heard of Skrillex, but I wasn't watching it that closely. And Harmony, who I've worked with forever, sent me a link to some Skrillex YouTubes, and I saw one had 54 million hits-- I thought he had somehow figured out a way to manipulate the numbers. And then it dawns on you: There are kids that are never going to buy a record. They're just going to play songs on YouTube."

That's actually a pretty inspired choice all told, and while we're not exactly fans of his music, Skrillex's roof raising tunes and style kind of perfectly fits with the vibe we're expecting from the movie. Starring James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, the film follows four college-aged girls who decide to rob a fast food restaurant in order to pay for the annual getaway, and who get thrown in the slammer once they get there. A rapping drug and arms dealer bails out the girls, and coaxes them to kill his nemesis Arch.??

We'll be curoius to see what tunes Poster brings into the equation as well, but we're pretty excited to see Korine go full tilt in a completely new direction; it's certainly a huge 180 from getting Sun City Girls to work on "Mister Lonely."

No release date yet for "Spring Breakers" but with each new bit of info, the movie gets more enticing. Just when we think Korine was out of twists, he's come with another one, so we wonder what's coming next.

Breast Cancer Patient Confirms Consuming Breast Milk to Cure ...

With the pursuit of fighting with breast cancer, a lady in Melbourne has turned to breast milk. One day, she approached her doctors at John Flynn Private Hospital and the Mater Hospital and asked the doctors if she can consume breast milk.

The doctors didn?t find any issue with the idea and gave her a green signal. Since then, she has been consuming breast milk donated by anonymous donor. She believes that breast milk is improving the quality of life.

The breast cancer victim, Jenny Jones, is 62- years -old. The news of being affected with multiple myeloma was shocking for her and for her family. Breast milk caries certain nutrition which boosts the immune system of babies.

Jenny Jones was aware of the universal truth and therefore opted for daily consumption of breast cancer. She said that after consuming breast milk for a month, her cancer level has gone down.

Besides having breast milk, she has also been taking oral chemotherapy pills. Further studies would be conducted to know whether or not breast milk is helpful in treating cancer. However, it is difficult to gauge which treatment has improved the health of Jenny.

From Nazi to Terminator, Europe's media target Merkel

BERLIN (Reuters) - Demonized in Europe's media as a red-eyed Terminator robot, a flabby centerfold pinup and a fleshy Roman god eating Greeks, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has become the subject of a new wave of vitriol for her tough stance on the euro zone crisis.

Already a figure of hate in Greece for insisting on austerity in exchange for aid, Merkel has long endured montages of herself in a Nazi uniform, but the run-up to this week's EU summit has unleashed particularly savage images and headlines.

Politicians from Paris to Washington are piling pressure on Merkel, leader of Europe's biggest economy, to solve the debt crisis which threatens to derail the global economy.

But 'Frau Nein' shows little sign of giving ground on such issues as mutualizing Europe's debt or slashing public spending - not least because her approach has boosted her popularity among German voters in the countdown to next year's election.

Britain's left-wing New Statesman magazine last week splashed an image of Merkel as the Terminator with a glistening robotic eye and Arnold Schwarzenegger-style black jacket on its front cover under the headline "Europe's most dangerous leader".

In an article arguing that Merkel's "mania for austerity" is destroying Europe, senior editor Mehdi Hasan characterized her as a greater danger to global prosperity and order than Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

"Merkel is the most dangerous German leader since Hitler" wrote Hasan, adding that under her leadership Germany, Europe's paymaster, was isolated, loathed and feared in equal measure.

It may be a British tradition to poke fun at Germans, but the tone has turned nasty even in some mainstream publications.

The centrist Independent daily has published a reproduction of Goya's painting of 'Saturn devouring his son' showing a wild-eyed Merkel, with a Greek flag as a bib, devouring a Greek.

SINKING SHIP

Unsurprisingly, Spain, which this month said it would request European aid for its banks after weeks of pressure from Berlin, has joined the anti-Merkel chorus.

Spanish satirical magazine El Jueves (Thursday) renamed its last issue Die Jueven to sound German. Its front page carried a caricature of a rotund Merkel squashing Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and stepping on him like a doormat.

Inside Merkel is featured as a center-fold pinup, after being crowned 'Miss Spain 2012'. Wearing blue heels and a swimsuit, she looks flabby and haggard and is weeping with joy at her luck at being named the most beautiful woman in Spain.

The influential Economist weekly has also targeted Merkel with a cover picture of a sinking ship labeled 'The World Economy' hurtling towards the sea floor with the caption 'Please can we start the engines now, Mrs Merkel?'.

In Greece, where memories of wartime atrocities committed by Nazis run deep, she has faced a media onslaught ever since she first showed her reluctance to bail out Athens.

Newspapers have printed computer-generated images of an evil-looking Merkel in a Nazi uniform and earlier this year furious protestors even burned German flags.

Merkel's allies have rallied round, saying she can withstand the attacks and will not be swayed by provocative headlines.

"I am not worried (about Merkel's image abroad) because the characterization of the chancellor can be explained by her support for something other than simple, popular demands," said Michael Grosse-Broemer, chief whip of Merkel's conservatives.

"I think some emotionally-driven judgments about this great chancellor are off the mark," he said.

Yet the pressure is starting to show. There is no denying 57-year-old Merkel looks weary and she has visibly gained weight in the last few months.

Some seasoned German reporters who regularly accompany the chancellor on trips say she has grown tetchy with the media and unusually she gave no full media briefing after this month's G20 summit of world leaders in Mexico.

When U.S. President Barack Obama asked Merkel how she was at the G20 summit, she merely shrugged her shoulders.

But people who know the chancellor say they are not worried.

"She has strong nerves and a thick skin," said Merkel biographer and political scientist Gerd Langguth.

"She may look a bit tired but she's not put off by the whirlwind around her, she is very controlled and will not change her policies on account of such headlines," he added.

SOCCER HOSTILITY

It is little wonder Merkel insisted on taking a break last week to see Germany clinch a predictable soccer victory in Euro 2012 over Greece in a highly charged game.

Merkel looked at her most relaxed for months as she jumped from her seat and punched the air when the Germans scored.

However, even that respite caused some thinly-veiled criticism from French President Francois Hollande after she ordered talks with him and their Spanish and Italian counterparts be brought forward so she could attend the game.

And traditional soccer rivalry has given way to a personal vendetta in Italy which faces Germany in the Euro 2012 semi-finals on Thursday.

Corriere della Sera wrote: "Now it's Merkel's turn. Italy is well equipped in the battle for Europe."

In truth, Merkel is in a bind. She cannot please all her international partners and her domestic voters at the same time.

"The most important thing for Merkel is getting re-elected, that is obviously her main focus," said Langguth.

So far she is doing well on that front, riding high in polls. Voters, who have in the last decade tightened their belts and until now accepted restrained wage rises, are fed up with paying for what they see as profligate euro zone states.

Clearly playing to the domestic audience and signaling that she is prepared to dig in her heels, Merkel told members of her Free Democrat (FDP) coalition partners on Tuesday Europe would not see metalized debt, or euro bonds, "as long as I live".

Yet critics say even at this late stage in the crisis, Merkel lacks the strategic vision to get Europe back on track.

U.S. billionaire George Soros this week described Merkel's position as short-sighted, arguing Germany was missing a chance to become a benevolent sponsor of southern Europe just as the United States was for Europe after 1945 with the Marshall Plan.

"Merkel has realized that the euro is not working, but she cannot change the narrative she has created because that narrative has caught the imagination of the German public, and the German public has accepted it," Soros told Spiegel Online.

Her allies say she is not alone in the euro zone discussions as some richer northern states also support her tough position. They also argue that critics from abroad fail to appreciate the parliamentary and constitutional restraints she is under.

In the course of the debt crisis, the German Constitutional Court has ruled several times to boost the say of Germany's parliament in euro zone affairs, slowing down the decision-making process.

Ironically, it was the United States and Britain which imposed this political system of checks and balances on Germany after World War Two to avoid a repeat of Hitler's dictatorship.

And so begins an article that focuses on a new brochure from emeritus.com on balancing caregiving duties and dating, When Your Only Date is Mom. For some reason, I just keep thinking about the sit-com The Golden Girls, and although they dated from time to time, their number one investment was their friendship, which helped to support them in their commitments to their families. Dorothy?s mom eventually moved in with them.? It made me think that both for now and in the coming 30 to 40 years when there will be even more single elderly and far fewer young-uns to to care for them, that perhaps brochures on friendship and sharing homes would be more helpful.

FILE- This Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, file photo, shows News Corp.'s headquarters in New York. Under pressure to limit contagion from the British phone hacking scandal, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. confirmed Tuesday, June 26, 2012, that it is considering splitting into two publicly traded companies. The Wall Street Journal, News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, reported late Monday that the company is considering the separation of the newspaper and book publishing businesses from the entertainment arm, which includes Fox News Channel, broadcast TV network and 20th Century Fox movie studio. The media conglomerate did not specify Tuesday which businesses each company would contain. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)

News Corp. said Thursday that its board has approved plans to split into two companies. One company will operate as a newspaper and book publisher, while the other will be an entertainment company.

Here's how the split will work:

? Newspapers, book publishing and information services such as Dow Jones Newswires will be part of the publishing company. The 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox broadcast TV network and the Fox News channel will be part of the media and entertainment company.

? Shareholders will get a share in each company for every share of News Corp. they now own. That ratio may change by the time the plan is finalized. Both companies will trade publicly, under different stock tickers.

? Rupert Murdoch will be chairman of both companies and CEO of the media and entertainment company. The company did not name a CEO for the publishing business.

? News Corp.'s board unanimously approved the split, but it will need to approve a more formal proposal. The deal is also subject to shareholder and numerous regulatory approvals.

? News Corp. plans to hold a special meeting of its shareholders in the first half of 2013 and expects the deal to be completed in about a year.

Ballot.com Sale Shows Politics Online Is Big Business | My Best ...

Miami, FL (PRWEB) May 21, 2012

With only 6 months to go before the 2012 presidential election, candidates, organizations and investors hoping to capture the publics attention are buying up political-flavored domain names while established media companies are enjoying increased advertising revenue to their political websites. The upcoming sale of Ballot.com is catching a lot of attention due to these and additional factors.

Political candidates also are now raising literally tens of millions of dollars using the Internet alone. In addition, sales of websites, domains and related businesses have generated millions of dollars as investors snap up inventory.

According to the Berkeley Daily Planet, $8 billion dollars will likely be spent on the 2012 Election Cycle. That compares with $3 billion in the 2010 election a record for a mid-term election and $5.3 billion in 2008.

Politics online is becoming very big business.

According to recent reports, Republican candidates like Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Ron Paul have spent a significant amount money on domain names and online media buys in the last few months, as has President Barack Obamas re-election campaign. Some have even raised millions of dollars on the web from their avid supporters in a single days time. The Internet is now booming when it comes to the business of Politics.

Just in time for the 2012 campaign season, Ballot.com is up for sale at Flippa.com ? the worlds #1 marketplace for buying and selling web sites.

?Premium single-word domain names have always been big business, and Flippa?s seeing more and more of these very large sales. We?re honored to be hosting the auction for Ballot.com, which is obviously a top drawer piece of online real estate. It could be a great buy for investors or for entrepreneurs with a smart plan,? said Flippa CEO Dave Slutzkin.

Industry monitor DNJournal.com qualifies one-word dot-com domain names as the oceanfront real estate of the Internet, being quite valuable and rare.

Single-word domain names are a hot commodity and investment opportunity for businesses, entrepreneurs and celebrities, with many of them snapped up in the 1990s. Recently, Social.com was sold for over $2.5 million. One Canadian band is hoping to strike it rich by selling their domain, TeaParty.com, with some estimates of its value running as high as $1 million.

With such a descriptive name, Ballot.com would be ideal for an investor, major media company, political candidate, or even a market research company. With the word ballot trending in Googles search statistics, this domain name also has large advertising potential.

Sergey Brin hopes to bring Google Glass to market in 2014

Sergey Brin hopes to bring Google Glass to market in 2014

If you're not one of the lucky few who met Google's requirements (be a U.S. citizen attending IO) and don't have $1,500 to drop on an early dev unit of an unproven technology, you might be wondering, "when can I get my hands on Glass?" The answer, straight from Sergey Brin's mouth, is 2014... hopefully. The Google big wig told Bloomberg that, if all goes according to plan, Google Glass will become available to consumers en masse sometime in 2014. Of course, how much cheaper they'll be two years from now is anyones guess. But we wouldn't expect the first-gen to be an impulse purchase. When you check out the video after the break, you might notice that Sergey is wearing a new set of Glass glasses (how's that for awkward sounding), these ones with some snap in shades. If you're wondering if progress could be made any faster, we wouldn't count on it. Brin says he spend more than half his time on this project -- which means Google is putting a lot of stock in the future of wearable computers. Check out the complete interview after the break.

Jobless claims tumble, but remain elevated

By msnbc.com staff and news wires

New claims for unemployment benefits dropped in the latest week, although they remain stuck at levels that show the job market remains soft.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that seasonally adjusted jobless claims slid?6,000 to 386,000. The four-week moving average, which smooths out wrinkles in the data, dropped 750 to 386,750.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims easing to 385,000 last week. The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends, slipped 750 to 386,750.

The labor market has lost a step in recent months as uncertainty spawned by the debt crisis in Europe and an unclear fiscal policy path at home has made businesses reluctant to hire. However, there are no signs in the claims data that companies are responding to that uncertainty by laying off workers.

Jobless claims have barely moved since April and the lack of improvement suggests a fundamental weakness in the labor market.

Concerns about the jobs market prompted the Federal Reserve last week to ease monetary policy further by extending a program to re-weight bonds it already holds toward longer maturities to hold down borrowing costs.

A Labor Department official said there was nothing unusual in the state-level data and no state had been estimated.

The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid fell 15,000 to 3.3 million in the week ended June 16.

That covered the survey period for June's unemployment rate. The jobless rate rose in May for the first time since last August and could remain elevated as most states stop offering extended benefits to the long-term unemployed.

Only six states and the District of Columbia were offering extended benefits in the week ended June 9. A total of 5.9 million people were claiming unemployment benefits under all programs during that period, up 71,724 from the previous week.

'Draw Something' animates John Mayer video

By Randee Dawn

Millions have used "Draw Something" to play a game, but design studio head Jimmy Thompson had a different idea -- he would turn a series of "Draw" sketches into an animated video for?John Mayer's "Queen of California." And Mayer approves.

"A must-see. So great," said the musician, posting on his Tumblr blog.?

The video features some simple and some intricate drawings that help illustrate the song, and it's visually addicting.?

"There is something really charming about the medium -- the strokes -- and I love the anticipation when you watch someone?s drawing being revealed," Thompson, founder of Brainbowinc, told Mashable. "I thought ("Draw Something" would)?be a good match for a song with a lot of nouns."

As Mashable noted, Brainbowinc has worked with Mayer's label Columbia Records before, but they weren't involved in his creating the video. Nor is Mayer the first artist to get the "Draw Something" treatment -- singer/songwriter Isaac Simons asked fans to contribute artwork from the game for his "Call to Arms" video in March. ?

Tests find only marijuana in face-chewer's system

(AP) ? Lab tests detected only marijuana in the system of a Florida man shot while chewing on another man's face, the medical examiner said Wednesday, ruling out other street drugs including the components typically found in the stimulants known as "bath salts."

There has been much speculation about what drugs, if any, would lead to the bizarre behavior that authorities said Rudy Eugene exhibited before and during the gruesome attack that left the other man horribly disfigured. A Miami police union official had suggested that Eugene, who was shot and killed by an officer, was probably under the influence of bath salts.

The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner said in a news release that the toxicology detected marijuana, but it didn't find any other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs. Eugene also tested negative for adulterants commonly mixed with street drugs.

The department ruled out the most common components found in so-called bath salts, which mimic the effects of cocaine or methamphetamine and have been associated with bizarre crimes in recent months. An outside forensic toxicology lab, which took a second look at the results, also confirmed the absence of bath salts, synthetic marijuana and LSD.

Messages left with the medical examiner's office for comment were not immediately returned.

The Drug Enforcement Administration last year temporarily outlawed the possession and sale of three synthetic stimulants sometimes packaged as "bath salts." Several states have also moved to ban the drugs, often sold on the Internet and in head shops and other retail outlets. The bans don't affect the kinds of bath salts added to tubs for their fragrance and cosmetic benefits.

An expert on toxicology testing said that marijuana alone wasn't likely to cause behavior as strange as Eugene's.

"The problem today is that there is an almost an infinite number of chemical substances out there that can trigger unusual behavior," said Dr. Bruce Goldberger, Professor and Director of Toxicology at the University of Florida.

Goldberger said that the medical examiner's office in Miami is known for doing thorough work and that he's confident they and the independent lab covered as much ground as possible. But it's nearly impossible for toxicology testing to keep pace with new formulations of synthetic drugs.

"There are many of these synthetic drugs that we currently don't have the methodology to test on, and that is not the fault of the toxicology lab. The challenge today for the toxicology lab is to stay on top of these new chemicals and develop methodologies for them, but it's very difficult and very expensive." Goldberger said. "There is no one test or combination of tests that can detect every possible substance out there."

An addiction expert said she wouldn't rule out marijuana causing the agitation.

"It could have been the strain of marijuana that increases the dopamine in the brain, such as sativa," said Dr. Patricia Junquera, assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

There are two strains of marijuana called sativa and indica. The sativa increases dopamine and gives you energy while decreasing pain threshold. Indica is a "sleepy high," she explained.

"People don't really know what the amount of either is in each little packet of marijuana," she explained. "And we can't differentiate between the two in the blood, much less in a dead person."

She also suggested that if Eugene had a mental disorder, "the marijuana could have increased even further the dopamine levels and aggravated the situation. So that can't be ruled out."

It's not clear what led to the May 26 attack on Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man who remains hospitalized. Eugene's friends and family have said he was religious, not violent and that he didn't drink or do drugs harder than marijuana.

"There's no answer for it, not really," Eugene's younger brother, Marckenson Charles, said in an interview. "Anybody who knew him knows this wasn't the person we knew him to be. Whatever triggered him, there is no answer for this."

Surveillance video from a nearby building shows Eugene stripping Poppo and pummeling him, before appearing to hunch over and lie on top of him. The police officer who shot Eugene to death said he growled at the officer when he told him to stop.

Charles, Eugene's brother, said the family does not plan to pursue any legal action against the police for shooting Eugene.

"They used the force they felt was necessary, even if we don't agree with that,' he said.

He said that Eugene has been buried.

Shortly before the attack, a person driving on the MacArthur Causeway told a 911 dispatcher a "completely naked man" was on top of one of the light poles on the causeway and "acting like Tarzan." Still, police have said little about what may prompted Eugene to attack Poppo.

Poppo has undergone several surgeries and remains hospitalized. His left eye was removed, but doctors said earlier this month they were trying to find a way to restore vision in his right eye. He will need more surgeries before he can explore the options for reconstructing his face, doctors have said. A message left with the hospital was not immediately returned.

Poppo's family has said it had no contact with him for more than 30 years and thought he was dead.

Eugene's girlfriend, meanwhile, has said he never showed any signs of violence. Yovonka Bryant said she and Eugene often read the Bible and the Quran together, and often watched a religious television program in the mornings. She said she never saw Eugene drink and only saw him smoke marijuana once at a party.

One-Fifth of Nursing Home Residents Fall in First Month

Large study also linked certified nursing assistant staffing to lower risk.

MONDAY, June 25 (HealthDay News) ? A new study finds that one in five newly admitted nursing home patients has a fall within one month, and that higher levels of staffing with certified nursing assistants reduces the risk of patient falls.

The researchers examined Medicare/Medicaid data on more than 230,000 first-time residents admitted to nearly 10,000 nursing homes across the United States in 2006. Of those patients, 21 percent had at least one fall during their first 30 days in the facility.

The study authors also looked at potential factors that contribute to falls and found that fewer falls occurred in nursing homes with higher ratios of certified nursing assistants to patients.

This is likely because certified nursing assistants provide most of the hands-on patient care during high fall-risk activities such as dressing, using the bathroom, and moving around, said lead author Natalie Leland, a research gerontologist and occupational therapist at the University of Southern California, and colleagues.

The study was published in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Fall rates among long-term nursing home residents are well-documented, but the researchers believe this is the first study to focus on fall rates among newly admitted residents.

Identifying and managing fall risks among these residents is a challenge because these people are in a new place and are unfamiliar to staff, the study authors said.

They noted that some newly admitted nursing home residents are there for rehabilitation with the eventual goal of sending them home.

?A fall can delay or permanently prevent the patient from returning to the community, and identifying risk of falling is essential for implementing fall-prevention strategies and facilitating successful discharge back to the community,? Leland said in a University of Southern California news release.

Federal court upholds EPA's greenhouse gas rules

(AP) ? A federal appeals court is upholding the first federal regulations to reduce the gases blamed for global warming.

The rules, which were challenged by industry groups and states, will reduce emissions of six heat-trapping gases from large industrial facilities, such as factories and power plants, as well as automobile tailpipes.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington said Tuesday that the Environmental Protection Agency was "unambiguously correct" in using existing federal law to address global warming. The court denied two of the challenges, including one arguing the agency erred in concluding greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare.

The court dismissed challenges to two other regulations.

The court didn't immediately release the decision, but The Associated Press obtained a copy from a participant in the case.

Atlantic heat constrains Arctic sea ice extent

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? The Arctic sea ice cover is a sensitive indicator of climate variability and change. Researchers from the Bjerknes Centre in Bergen, Norway, have for the first time quantified how Atlantic heat influences the sea ice extent in the Barents Sea, where the retreat in Arctic winter sea ice is the most pronounced.

The winter sea ice extent in the Barents Sea has gradually decreased during the last three decades, and the annual mean sea ice area was reduced by about 50% during the last decade (1998-2008). A new study reported in Journal of Climate by researchers from the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (University of Bergen, Uni Research, and Institute of Marine Research), shows that interannual variability and long-term decrease in sea ice cover reflect changes in the inflow of Atlantic water.

This warm water flows northward off the Norwegian coast and into the Barents Sea as an extension of the Gulf Stream. Measurements from the south-western Barents Sea and results from a numerical ocean model reveal that increased heat transport (a product of changes in temperature and current speed) associated with Atlantic water leads to a larger area with no wintertime freezing.

Most of the sea ice retreat is thus not ice that has melted -- this sea ice never froze -- and is therefore a fundamentally different process than the observed summer sea ice retreat in the central Arctic.
