Apple heads into choppy waters as new iPhone awaited

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc faces an unusual phenomenon when reporting earnings this time around: low expectations.

Few are expecting the world's most valuable technology company -- which surpasses Wall Street expectations with near regularity -- to deliver a bumper quarter once more on Tuesday.

The main reason: consumers holding out for the new iPhone.

Apple may still surprise market watchers, but many Wall Street analysts and investors remember how chatter over the launch of a new iPhone last year caused Apple to miss quarterly expectations in the fall, for the first time in years.

The iPhone 5 is only expected to hit store shelves around October -- just in time for the holidays -- with a thinner, larger screen and fine-tuned search features. Couple that pre-launch lull with slowdowns in Europe and China, Apple's biggest markets outside of North America, and sentiment on the Wall Street darling is more muted than many can remember in a while.

"No longer is Apple the company that beats every time," said Tim Lesko, portfolio manager at Granite Investment Advisors, which owns Apple stock. "I expect Apple to beat Apple's guidance, but I don't know whether they will beat Wall Street's guidance."

Tony Sacconaghi, analyst with Bernstein Research, sees a reasonable chance Apple will miss expectations on revenue, citing "macroeconomic weakness in China and Europe, a product cycle lull in the iPhone, a later than expected introduction of the new iPad into China, and the late quarter introduction of new Mac notebooks."

Any hiccup in demand for the best-selling smartphone can have a big impact on both revenue and profits as the five-year old device accounts for nearly 50 percent for Apple's revenues. And it comes at a time Samsung and other manufacturers that use rival Google Inc's Android software are chipping away at its market share.

Apple is expected to report fiscal third-quarter earnings of $10.35 a share on revenue of $37.2 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Top Wall Street analysts are betting the numbers will undershoot that. Apple may miss the average sales forecast by about 0.2 percent, according to Thomson Reuters Starmine's SmartEstimates, which places greater emphasis on timely forecasts by top-rated analysts.

IPAD'S LAUNCH IN CHINA

But some analysts also think the Street is underestimating the impact of a late iPad launch in China, a focal point of intense expansion for the company and a huge driver of growth.

Apple began selling the tablet there on Friday, but many had expected it to ship last quarter.

Sales in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan jumped threefold to $7.9 billion in the second quarter, accounting for about 20 percent of Apple's $39.2 billion in total revenue.

The company typically introduces a new iPhone every year, but has yet to reveal any details on the next model.

However, people familiar with the situation have told Reuters the new iPhone will have a bigger display and that Apple has begun to place orders for the new displays from suppliers in South Korea and Japan.

Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone 4S is just three quarters old, which is relatively new by any standard. But many fans of the phone now see it as a cyclical product with somewhat predictable launch timeframes, preferring to wait a few months to buy the new model, analysts said.

Wall Street estimates Apple sold about 29 million iPhones, down from 35.1 million sold in the March quarter. Sales of the new iPad, expected to be 14 million to 15 million, is likely to offset part of the anticipated sequential drop in iPhones sales.

Apart from concerns about iPhone purchases, Wall Street is worried about the rising prominence of Google and Amazon.com in the mobile market, particularly with the launch of Google's smaller and cheaper Nexus 7 tablet, which is gaining popularity.

Still, no one is bearish in the longer term on the world's largest technology company by market value and most Apple watchers believe the company will make up any lost iPhone volume during the holiday season.

"Big picture, it doesn't matter," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. "They are still the share gainer in the larger scheme of things. This is clearly a timing issue."

BIG HOLIDAY SEASON EYED

Wall Street expects that the outlook for this year's holiday season will be enormous for Apple as it may include the launch of a new iPhone as well as a potential new "mini iPad."

Apple has been working on a smaller tablet, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

It is unclear when Apple will launch such a tablet, but some clues are emerging on the timing of the new iPhone.

When Verizon -- one of the wireless carriers that work with Apple -- was asked on Thursday why customers have been holding back on handset upgrades, CFO Fran Shammo said: "There is always that rumor mill out there with a new phone coming out in the fourth quarter and so people may be waiting."

Investors will pick apart executives' comments for clues to new product introductions. While Apple has a policy of never giving advance details or timings on new products, Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer has often hinted of "product transition" in earnings conference calls preceding a launch.

Wall Street estimates Apple sold about 4 million Macintosh computers as the PC market saw growth sputter in the quarter.

The lackluster expectations do not appear to have affected Apple's stock, which is up nearly 50 percent so far in 2012. The stock has been choppy since a high of $644 in April. It closed Friday at $604.30 on the Nasdaq.

"Of all the quarters, this is the one that seems to have widest range of opinion," said Granite's Lesko.

One flight attendant's grassroots idea has turned into a symbol of unity for United and Continental.

A small gesture is getting big raves from flight attendants who now work for the company created by the merger of United and Continental Airlines but who continue to fly separately?in their traditional United or Continental uniforms?while union and contract issues are worked out.

Flight attendants who came from the old Continental Airlines recently ratified a new contract, which means attendants can now negotiate a joint contract to cover the combined group of about 24,000 flight attendants ? including about 9,000 U.S. flight attendants who came from Continental.

?We have to two diverse cultures with completely different work rules, wants and needs,? said Sara Keagle, a Continental flight attendant who blogs as the Flying Pinto.

The two teams will eventually be blended and issued new matching uniforms. But as a symbol of friendship and bridge-building, flight attendants from each airline have been swapping their regulation neckwear for the scarves and ties worn by the other team.

The informal program was started by Kathe Hull, a United flight attendant who was reading through messages on a flight attendant Facebook page on June 29th. ?It?s sort of been like the first day of school; we?ve all been eyeing each other, wondering if we were going to be friends. I was checking in on the page and I thought that instead of just posting a comment here and there I would make a gesture to my peers at my sister airline,? Hull told NBC News. She asked if a Continental flight attendant would be willing to trade scarves. ?I wanted it to foster a friendship beyond Facebook,? said Hull, who has been a flight attendant for United since Valentine?s Day 1991.

Hull kicked off the program by putting two of her United scarves in a small plastic bag with her name, base city and a note to a potential ?scarf-sister? from Continental. She left the bag in a swap box she set up in the Newark domicile, one of the briefing rooms where flight attendants check-in before their flights.

United flight attendant Kathe Hull kicked off the informal program by fostering a friendship with the other attendants beyond Facebook.

?I have no idea who got my scarves,? said Hull. But she does know that the idea has spread like wildfire.

With the help of an enthusiastic ?scarf squad,? swap boxes with plastic bags of scarves, ties and some wings have been set up in domiciles all over the United States. And through a new Facebook page?set up for what has been now been dubbed ?The Sisterhood and Brotherhood of the Traveling Scarves and Ties,? Hull has learned that swap boxes have been set up at the airline?s bases in Guam, Narita, Japan and Frankfurt, Germany.

?It?s like pen pals meet The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,? said Hull, referring to the popular young adult books and movies about a group of friends who must be apart but stay in touch by sharing a magical pair of blue jeans.

?It?s an uncertain time. Bases are opening and closing. People are shifting around,? said Hull. ?This is a good way to begin feeling like a family.?

The uniforms worn by both United and Continental flight attendants are navy blue, but passengers who look closely should be able to spot the swappers, who have cleared the non-regulation accessories with United management.

The new swap program has been dubbed, "The Sisterhood and Brotherhood of the Traveling Scarves and Ties," and has been set up at the airline's bases in Guam, Narita, Japan and Frankfurt, Germany.

You can, on that search page, also enter a different location, if you want to search an area you plan to move to, for instance. Plus, if you have a?HomeFinder.com account, you can sync your searches.

Two things ? first, while I wouldn?t say it was hard, exactly, switching back and forth between the GPS area and somewhere else did require me to go in and create a whole new search each time. I would have liked to have a way to quickly jump between locations, while maintaining my other search criteria. I know most users will probably be focusing on a single area, so it?s not that big of a deal, but for someone who, for example, wants to use the app to investigate property prices and types before deciding on a place to live, it would be nice to have that function be a bit easier to use.

Second, when I downloaded the app, since it said it was a home finder, I expected to find all residential properties, of all types. However, other than two categories, it seemed like most of the options were more commercial or business related. And there was no option for rentals, only for purchase. I would have overlooked the lack of rental options if it wasn?t for the business listings, which felt more out of place than apartments would have. I will point out ? the description said that rentals and apartments are included. However, the category is ?Condos and Apartments? and honestly, I think of those as two very different things, for very different people. And my searches in that category didn?t bring up a single rental ? only condos.?

One knock against some of Anderson's previous efforts is that they're too clever - so clever, in fact, that the humanity gets sucked out of them. That doesn't happen here.

"Moonrise Kingdom" is the type of movie that is charming for the soul and makes your brain happy in the process. All in all, it's just a heartfelt and well-written experience that will appeal to everyone.

These charming kids give "Moonrise Kingdom" the warm glow of a summer fairy-tale, one you'll want to hear again.

Pure Joy. This film's heroes may be pint-sized but their emotions and dreams are larger than life.

The two printers also differ in other ways. The maximum resolutions, for example, are 600 by 2,400 dots per inch (dpi) for the MB461 versus 1,200 by 1,200 for the MB471, a difference that can affect both speed and output quality.

Basics
The MB461's basic MFP features include the ability to print from and scan to a PC, including over a network, as well as work as a standalone copier. Remains of 27-year-old pilot who died in Tornado jet crash recovered

The remains of two RAF pilots have been recovered from the site of a Tornado jet crash off the north coast of Scotland, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

Flight Lieutenant Adam Sanders, 27, and Squadron Leader Samuel Bailey, 26, had been missing since the accident involving two jets over the Moray Firth on July 3.

On Wednesday morning the MoD said remains found were those of Flt Lt Sanders. They later confirmed additional remains recovered from the wreckage were identified as Sqn Ldr Bailey.

A spokesman said: "The RAF can confirm that the remains of Sqn Ldr Sam Bailey have been formally identified and the next of kin informed, our thoughts and prayers remain with them at this very difficult time.

"The next of kin of the aircrew involved in this tragic incident and all at RAF Lossiemouth are very grateful for the tremendous show of public support that has been evident since."

Four personnel from RAF Lossiemouth were involved in the incident in which two Tornado GR4s came down in the Moray Firth during a training flight on July 3.

The funeral of Flight Lieutenant Hywel Poole, who was airlifted from the scene following the crash but later died in hospital, took place on Wednesday at Bangor Cathedral, Wales.

The 28-year-old was serving with the 15 (Reserve) Squadron alongside Flight Lieutenant Sanders and Squadron Leader Bailey.

A fourth member of the flight crew is recovering from his injuries in Aberdeen.

A spokesman for the Military Aviation Authority added: "The recovery of wreckage has now been completed and the service inquiry panel, assisted by the Military Air Accident Investigation Branch, will continue to work quickly and thoroughly to investigate the circumstances of the accident."

WASHINGTON ? The outlook for the U.S. economy appeared dimmer Monday after a report that Americans spent less at retail businesses for a third straight month in June.

The report led some economists to downgrade their estimates for economic growth in the April-June quarter. Many now think the economy grew even less than in the first quarter of the year, when it expanded at a sluggish 1.9 percent annual rate.

Spending in June fell in nearly every major category ? from autos, furniture and appliances to building, garden supplies and department stores. Overall, retail sales slid 0.5 percent from May to June, the Commerce Department said.

Retail sales hadn?t fallen for three straight months since the fall of 2008, at the height of the financial crisis.

The weak U.S. spending figures were released on the same day that the International Monetary Fund slightly lowered its outlook for global growth over the next two years.

Stocks fell after the Commerce report was issued. The Dow Jones industrial average sank 74 points in early trading. Broader indexes also declined. Later in the day, stocks regained some of their losses.

?However hard you look, there?s just no good news in this report,? said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

Weakening retail spending could make the Federal Reserve more likely to act further to try to encourage more borrowing and spending by lowering long-term interest rates. The Fed?s policy committee will meet at the end of this month.

Most economists don?t expect new Fed action after that meeting. But some said Monday?s Commerce report, coming after three straight months of tepid hiring, makes some Fed action more likely by year?s end.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will testify to Congress about the economy on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Despite the lackluster spending in April through June, retail sales were still 4.7 percent higher in the second quarter than in the same period in 2011. And the figures don?t include spending on services, which makes up about two-thirds of consumer purchases. Services range from doctor?s visits and plane tickets to rent payments and utility bills.

Spending figures for services aren?t yet available for June. But consumers have spent more on services each month this year.

Still, Ashworth said economic growth likely slowed to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter. That?s isn?t enough to lower high unemployment. The U.S. unemployment rate is 8.2 percent.

In Monday?s report, Commerce also said Americans spent less in April than previously thought. In part because of that, Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan Chase, lowered his estimate of growth in the April-June quarter from a 1.7 percent annual rate to a 1.4 percent rate. And he lowered his forecast for the July-September quarter to a 1.5 percent growth rate, down from a 2 percent rate.

Chris G. Christopher Jr., senior economist at IHS Global Insight, thinks the economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.3 percent last quarter. He doesn?t see much of a pickup in the second half of 2012: The annual growth rate will likely stay below 2 percent, he said.

Christopher said the biggest problem is meager job growth. Americans have also been rattled by gyrating stock prices stemming from Europe?s debt crisis.

?Consumers are getting hit from all sides,? Christopher said, despite the benefit of sharply lower gas prices since early April.

Lewis Tipograph, owner of Kid?s Closet, a midpriced children?s clothing store in Washington, D.C., said his business has suffered since April. Customers are more uneasy, he said.

?Earlier in the year, people were feeling more optimistic,? Tipograph said. ?There was a convergence of a lot of good things. But now, people are feeling nervous.?

Some of the sting of Monday?s retail sales report was eased by a separate Commerce report that U.S. companies added to their stockpiles in May. When businesses step up restocking, they tend to order more goods, leading to more factory production and economic growth.

Some hope also emerged from continued gains in ?nonstore?sales ? a category that consists mainly of online purchases. E-commerce sales have strengthened in the past year and now account for 9 percent of retail purchases.

?You?re definitely seeing a major shift in spending,? said New York-based retail consultant Walter Loeb.

Benefiting from the shift are online merchants like Wayfair.com. The company, which sells products ranging from baby strollers to decorative pillows, reported sales topping $500 million last year.

?Shoppers are not spending with abandon,? said Steve Conine, chairman of Boston-based privately held Wayfair.com. ?But the shopping patterns are in our favor.?

The overall decline in retail sales reflects, in part, falling gas prices. But even excluding sales at gas stations, retail spending fell 0.3 percent from May to June.

As hiring has slumped, workers? pay has barely kept up with inflation. Consumers have responded by pulling back on their spending, which drives about 70 percent of economic activity.

?Weak jobs data have certainly done nothing to alter our view that consumer spending growth will be very modest at best in the quarters ahead,? said Joshua Shapiro, chief U.S. economist at MFR Inc.

The IMF lowered its outlook for global growth over the next two years in part because of Europe?s financial crisis and slower expansion in China and India.

The international lending organization predicts global growth of 3.5 percent this year, down from its forecast in April of 3.6 percent. It cut its forecast for 2013 to 3.9 percent growth from 4.1 percent.

The IMF also cut its forecast for U.S. growth to 2 percent this year and 2.3 percent next year, both slightly below its previous estimates.

The retail spending report showed that sales at auto dealers ? one of the economy?s strongest areas this year ? fell 0.6 percent from May to June. That?s a gloomier sign than earlier reports from U.S. automakers had suggested.

The automakers have reported that sales rose 22 percent in June from the same month in 2011. But the automakers don?t adjust their sales data for seasonal changes. And their figures reflect changes from the same month in the previous year, not from month to month.

The weakness in June retail sales extended well beyond autos. The Commerce report showed sales fell 0.7 percent at department stores and 1.6 percent at building supply stores. Sales at furniture stores and electronics and appliance stores both fell 0.8 percent.

Sales at gas stations dropped 1.8 percent after a 2 percent drop in May. The declines reflected cheaper gas, which has dropped more than 50 cents since early April.

The economy is expanding too slowly to lower the unemployment rate. Employers have created an average of just 75,000 jobs a month in the April-June quarter ? only about a third of the monthly job growth during the previous three months.
