Agriculture sustainable way of making a living, says GBM - Daily Mail

SCOTT-OPENS-SHOWBy CHRISTINE CHISHA and KAPALA CHISUNKA
MINISTER of Defence Geoffrey Mwamba has urged Zambians to venture into agriculture as it is a sustainable way of making a living.
And Vice-President?s wife Charlotte Scott, has described this year?s 87th edition of the Agriculture and Commercial Show as an eye-opener for farmers to diversify crops and adapt to climate change.
Mr Mwamba, who pledged Government?s support towards the sector, said agriculture is the mainstay of the Zambian economy.
?Why should we allow foreigners to take over the agriculture sector when we are able to work more than them? In fact, I have been informed by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock that there are various support programmes for farmers,? he said.
Mr Mwamba was speaking in Lusaka after touring stands at the Agriculture and Commercial Show yesterday.
The 87th edition of the Agriculture and Commercial Show is running under the theme ?Business in a changing environment?.
The minister said it is time Zambia became a nation of producers to feed the entire nation and export excess produce.
Mr Mwamba, who described the exhibitions at the show as impressive, said he has been encouraged to venture into agriculture in Kasama.
Mr Mwamba expressed optimism that this year?s show will be a success and toured nine local stands.
The minister arrived at the showgrounds around 09:40 and was met by Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Bob Sichinga and other senior Government officials.
Mr Sichinga said his ministry targets to produce 150,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for the 2013/2014 farming season.
He said 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser will go towards the Fertiliser Input Support Programme (FISP) and the rest will go to the open market.
And Dr Scott said apart from farmers adapting to climate change and conservation farming, this year?s theme will help business people to diversify in their marketing strategy.
She said she was impressed that both farmers and business people have come up with new ways of doing business.
She pinpointed companies like Zesco, who are working tirelessly to meet the demand for electricity countryside, mitigate load shedding and build more hydro-power stations.
Dr Scott was also impressed with young farmers from rural areas who she said have more information and knowledge on climate change.
She commended NIPA for coming up with degree programmes and building a modern library.
She arrived at the Show Grounds around 09:10 hours and toured eight stands in the company of show society past president Elizabeth Nkumbula.

Andreessen-Backed Tutor Matching Service Is Working With Colleges To Upend The Tutoring Industry, Starting With Cost

Screen shot 2013-08-01 at 10.47.24 AMOf the many ways that technology is disrupting education, one area that's changing a lot, is rife with potential, but doesn't get as much play as it should is tutoring. Mostly, this involves the attempt to make high-quality, local tutors accessible to a wider range of students online, without having to turn to traditional channels, like Craigslist or those pesky, expensive SAT-focused private networks.

Nick Clegg reveals frustration over David Ward's Israel comments

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has revealed his frustration over controversial MP David Ward's comments on Israel.

Mr Clegg said he had discussed the issue with the Bradford East representative until he was "blue in the face".

In an interview with the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, the Lib Dem leader said he found it "totally unacceptable" that Mr Ward had continued to raise questions about Israel's right to exist.

The party whip was temporarily removed from Mr Ward last month following a series of tweets he sent about "apartheid" in Israel and how long the "Zionists" would last.

Mr Clegg told the paper: ?I believe and my party believes ? and David Ward is a representative of the Liberal Democrats ? in a two-state solution.

"It?s not consistent with our values and our policy to start raising questions about the existence of the state of Israel.

"That?s why I took the unprecedented step, after due process, to suspend the whip ? the first time I have done that to a Lib Dem MP.?

But Mr Clegg made no reference in the interview to Mr Ward's most offensive claims in January, ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day, that "the Jews" had afflicted "atrocities on the Palestinians".

New comments made by Mr Ward to his local paper today suggest he will not back down. He criticised Lib Dem chief whip Alistair Carmichael, suggesting he believed Mr Ward was "courting the Muslim vote".

Mr Ward said: "But that?s damned insulting both to Muslims and the white community I represent in Bradford, who regularly come up to me and offer their support.?

You Shouldn't Speak First When Learning Spanish

If there is only one thing I can tell you that you need to remember in order to learn Spanish or any Language at all- it is to:

Learn to LISTEN first BEFORE speaking.

Listening equals INPUT and speaking equals PRODUCTION. Let us take a factory as an example - how can a factory produce tons of products if it had no resources first and foremost? The steps they take are the same, right? They first gather resources (input) then they go into PRODUCTION. There is really no other way around.

Now that I told you about the factory; don't you think it's the same with language learning? You're just like a factory - a factory of words and vocabulary. How do you expect yourself to produce anything when you clearly have no input AT ALL? And not just that; you know what happens to a factory owner if he goes into production phase without the resources first in place? Aside from not being able to produce anything profitable, he will end up paying for overhead fees for the production and sooner or later the corporation becomes bankrupt and dies. The same goes to you, my friend; wanna die? Just kidding.

Obsessing on speaking without enough to input can lead into a disaster- you will end up being frustrated and eventually get burned out and quit. Remember that language learning is a not a "get rich quick" scheme. It involves a long road of immersion and Spanish (or any language you are learning) input acquisition. But the great news is that if you will use the correct and scientific method of language learning like the input method that we always discus; you can be sure to learn a lot FASTER than a guy who only uses only textbooks and burns himself out in classes as a beginner.

I myself took only 8 months of watching Spanish series then I found myself understanding 80% of what are being said. Spanish now sounds more or less like English for me and I now enjoy the Telenovelas and Spanish movies more than ever!

So that is what you must do for now- just watch Spanish-dubbed English shows you've seen many times in the past and I am sure after a few months you will become a real "Spaniard" just don't force yourself out for now.

So what are you waiting for? Play those telenovelas now. If you are learning German then play German drama; if you are learning French, then French - just don't stop until it makes you cry.

By the way, where do you get those movies? We have them at TRANSLATE FROM SPANISH TO ENGLISH (dot) com for FREE! Where learning Spanish is always fun and studying languages never feels like studying. BONUS, for a limmited time only: download Extr@ Espa?ol for free here: Extr@ Espa?ol

Former NCAA athletes win video game lawsuit against EA

Quarterback Sam Keller of the Arizona State Sun Devils during a game against the USC Trojans on October 1, 2005 in Tempe, Ariz. Keller has successfully sued EA to stop using his likeness.

Electronic Arts' college sports franchises have been sacked by a U.S. federal appeals court.

In a 2-1 vote, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a lower court that EA had used the images in its video games of several ex-NCAA athletes without their permission in its NCAA football and basketball series. The decision comes two weeks after EA lost the rights to put the NCAA logo and name on its games beyond this year.

Circuit Judge Jay Bybee, writing for the majority of the court, said EA's game "literally recreates [Arizona State University quarterback Samuel] Keller in the very setting in which he has achieved renown."

Circuit Judge Sidney Thomas dissented, however, arguing that the games' creative elements "predominate over the commercial use of the athletes' likenesses" and that "Keller's impressive physical likeness can be morphed by the gamer into an overweight and slow virtual athlete, with anemic passing ability".

The decision could open up additional legal action against the video game publisher from other former college athletes who have been unhappy with their likenesses being used in the games without compensation.

In a statement, EA said it was "disappointed with the ruling against First Amendment protection in the Keller case. We believe the reasoning in Judge Thomas' dissent in that decision will ultimately prevail as we seek further court review."

(Read more: No porn please, we're British)

EA is already facing similar suits to the one ruled on today by the appeals court. The company asked a judge on Tuesday to dismiss the latest complaint, which was filed on behalf of a group of athletes led by Ed O'Bannon, a former star at the University of California, Los Angeles. Also, in May, a federal appeals court revived a similar suit from former Rutgers University quarterback Ryan Hart.

EA had argued in the case that using the athletes' likeness was protected under the free expression clause of the First Amendment. Judges disagreed in the case of college athletes, but?in a separate decision?agreed with EA in the case of former pro players.

The court unanimously upheld the dismissal of a suit by Hall of Famer Jim Brown, whose image was used in EA's Madden game.

EA has used the First Amendment argument before when facing legal action for images in its games. In 2011, Bell Helicopter parent Textron sued over the game maker's use of images of a trio of real world helicopters in "Battlefield 3."

Textron argued its choppers were used without permission and EA failed to pay licensing fees. EA claimed protection under the First Amendment and the use of the aircraft constituted fair use.

The case is still pending, though EA did lose an attempt to have the complaint dismissed a year ago.

While the Madden franchise is a larger driver of revenues, EA still relied heavily on its NCAA franchise. But sales this year have been soft, say analysts. John Taylor of Arcadia Investment Corp. said he believes sales of the 2013 installment are off roughly 10 percent compared to the 2012 game.

And starting next year, the company won't be able to use the NCAA name. The league recently announced it would not negotiate a new contract with EA when the current one expires next June.

"We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games," the NCAA said at the time. "But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA. ... The NCAA has never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images or likenesses to EA. The NCAA has no involvement in licenses between EA and former student-athletes."

EA has vowed to continue making college sports games, however.

"Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company [which manages the trademarks of the majority of the colleges in the game] is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, leagues, and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports," said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president of EA in a statement.

Analysts say they don't expect the loss to have a material financial impact on Electronic Arts, noting that the NCAA was a co-defendant in the suit.

"The transgressor here is the NCAA, I believe," said Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities. "I don't believe EA said to the NCAA 'can we use licensed images of the players.' The NCAA said 'no' and EA said 'we're going to do it anyway'."

"The NCAA has the right to license the athletes image without compensation to the athlete if he's playing in a [real world] game," Pachter added. "The question is: Can it exploit the likenesses out of the game? That depends on the contract the player signs with the NCAA."

Kristen Stewart is no longer Hollywood's highest-paid actress ? who took her spot?

Kristen Stewart was Hollywood's highest-paid actress for last year, according to Forbes, but someone else took the number one spot for this year. Kristen Stewart recently starred in the 'Twilight' films and 'Snow White and the Huntsman.'

All told, the actress earned an estimated $33 million between June 2012 and June 2013. That's a $13 million dollar raise from last year. Jolie had previously topped Forbes' 2013 "Most Powerful Actress" list as well.

Jolie reportedly earned $15 million for "Maleficent," Disney's retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty story.

In second place is Hollywood's current "It girl," Jennifer Lawrence. At $26 million a year, the Academy Award-winning actress ("Silver Linings Playbook") earned less than $1 million for "The Hunger Games," but after enormous box office success, Lionsgate gladly bumped up her pay for the sequel.

Kristen Stewart, who topped last year's list with a whopping $34.5 million in earnings, ranks third this year with an estimated $22 million.

Jennifer Aniston was next with $20 million, still making those "Friends" residuals.?Ranking fifth is Emma Stone who earned an estimated $16 million.

Rounding out the top 10 in order is Charlize Theron in sixth ($15 million), Sandra Bullock ($14 million), Natalie Portman ($14 million), Mila Kunis ($11 million) and Julia Roberts ($11 million).

Forbes compiled its list by talking to agents, managers and other "in-the-know" people to estimate entertainment-related revenue for each celebrity between June 2012 and June 2013. It did not deduct for taxes, agent fees or "any of the other costs of being a celebrity."
