Agent smartwatch SDK released, developers can start tinkering

Four days after hitting its Kickstarter goal, Agent Watches has released the SDK for its smartwatch. The watches won't ship until December, but all developers need to start working is the emulator and a Bluetooth-compatible device. Windows Phone 8 Developer Mike Hole posted a link to the tools on his blog, plus detailed notes with sample code and a how-to for the emulator. With all this info, maybe you'll write a few of the apps for the hip and sexy people from that Kickstarter video.

Mystery of the gigantic storm on Saturn

June 24, 2013 ? We now understand the nature of the giant storms on Saturn. Through the analysis of images sent from the Cassini space probe belonging to the North American and European space agencies (NASA and ESA respectively), as well as the computer models of the storms and the examination of the clouds therein, the Planetary Sciences Group of the University of the Basque Country has managed to explain the behaviour of these storms for the very first time. The article explaining the discovery, the lead author being Enrique Garc?a Melendo, researcher at the Fundaci? Observatori Esteve Duran -- Institut de Ci?ncies de l'Espai, of Catalonia, was published in Nature Geosciences.

Approximately once every Saturnian year -- equivalent to 30 Earth years -- an enormous storm is produced on the ringed planet and which affects the aspect of its atmosphere on a global scale. These gigantic storms are known as Great White Spots, due to the appearance they have on the atmosphere of the planet. The first observation of one of these was made in 1876; the Great White Spot of 2010 was the sixth one to be observed. On this occasion the Cassini space vehicle was able to obtain very high resolution images of this great meteorological structure. The storm initiated as a small brilliant white cloud in the middle latitudes of the northern hemisphere of the planet, and grew rapidly and remained active for more than seven months. Over this time an amalgam of white clouds was generated which expanded to form a cloudy and turbulent ring with a surface area of thousands of millions of square kilometres. Two year age the Planetary Sciences Group presented a first study of the storm and which was published on the front cover of Nature on the 7th of July, 2011. Now, with this new research, the hidden secrets of the phenomenon have been revealed, studying in detail the "head" and the "focus" of the Great White Spot.

The team of astronomers analysed the images taken from the Cassini probe in order to measure the winds in the "head" of the storm, the focus where the activity originated. In this region the storm interacts with the circulating atmosphere, forming very intense sustained winds, typically of 500 kilometres an hour. "We did not expect to find such violent circulation in the region of the development of the storm, which is a symptom of the particularly violent interaction between the storm and the planet's atmosphere," commented Enrique Garc?a. They were also able to determine that these storm clouds are at 40 km above the planet's own clouds.

Information about the mechanisms causing meteorological phenomena

The research revealed the mechanism that produces this phenomenology. The team of scientists designed mathematical models capable of reproducing the storm on a computer, providing a physical explanation for the behaviour of this giant storm and for its lengthy duration. The calculations show that the focus of the storm is deeply embedded, some 300 km above the visible clouds. The storm transports enormous quantities of moist gas in water vapour to the highest levels of the planet, forming visible clouds and liberating enormous quantities of energy. This injection of energy interacts violently with the dominant wind of Saturn to produce wind storms of 500 km/h. The research also showed that, despite the enormous activity of the storm, this was not able to substantially modify the prevailing winds which blow permanently in the same direction as Earth's parallels, but they did interact violently with them. An important part of the computer's calculations were made thanks to the Centre de Serveis Cient?fics i Acad?mics de Catalunya (CESCA), and the computer services at the Institut de Ci?ncies de l'Espai (ICE), also based in the Catalan capital of Barcelona.

Apart from the curiosity of knowing the physical processes underlying the formation of these giant storms on Saturn, the study of these phenomena enable us to enhance our knowledge of the models employed in research into meteorology and the behaviour of Earth's atmosphere, in a very different environment and impossible to simulate in a laboratory. "The storms on Saturn are, in a way, a test bank of the physical mechanisms underlying the generation of similar meteorological phenomena on Earth," commented Agust?n S?nchez Lavega, Director of the Planetary Sciences Group at the UPV/EHU.

Gerrit Cole pitches Pirates past Angels 5-2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? Gerrit Cole wasn't nervous about making his first major league road start in his backyard until he heard "Calling All Angels," the syrupy Train ballad played before every game at Angel Stadium.

"I've probably been listening to that song here since I was like 6 years old," said Cole, the Pittsburgh Pirates phenom with pure Southern California roots. "I might have a couple of Rally Monkeys at home."

Once the music faded, Cole shook off his homecoming jitters and kept rolling on an outstanding start to his career.

Cole pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning in his native Orange County, earning his third straight victory in the Pirates' 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

The Pirates' 22-year-old right-hander out of Orange Lutheran High School and UCLA dazzled the Angels, repeatedly hitting 100 mph on the stadium radar gun. He struck out five and retired 11 straight before Albert Pujols' leadoff homer in the seventh, leaving later in the inning to a warm ovation from his hometown fans.

"It was a lot of fun to see everybody and be back in California," Cole said. "I wasn't expecting to be back here for another few months, so it was great."

Cole (3-0) is the first Pittsburgh pitcher to win his first three career starts since Myrl Brown in 1922. He even outpitched Angels ace Jered Weaver (1-4), who yielded nine hits and four runs over six rocky innings in his fourth straight winless start.

After beating Cy Young winners Tim Lincecum and Zack Greinke in his first two starts, it's clear Cole can hold his own against the majors' best ? and still keep a sense of humor about his rising star.

"That's like $400 million worth of pitching," Cole said. "We've just been scoring runs and giving me a chance."

Until they ran into Cole, the Angels had won six of eight while enjoying perhaps the best offensive stretch of their disappointing season. Los Angeles had scored at least five runs in six of its last eight games, including 10 runs and 17 hits while rallying from a seven-run deficit to beat Seattle on Thursday.

"That's a power arm, there's no doubt about that," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "The ball comes out hot. I think we had some good at-bats against him and hit some balls hard, but for the most part, he was pounding the zone with good stuff and pitched a good game for those guys."

Cole, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, was born in nearby Newport Beach, Calif., and went to high school 15 minutes from Angel Stadium, racking up 121 strikeouts with an 0.46 ERA as a senior.

After three years at UCLA, Cole rocketed through the Pirates' system and made his major league debut in Pittsburgh to much fanfare 10 days ago. The 6-foot-4 power pitcher hasn't disappointed, beating San Francisco and the Dodgers in Pittsburgh before besting Weaver, who finished second in last year's AL Cy Young voting.

"He pitched like he was pitching in front of his friends and family," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "He was geared up. He got after it. It was like he was pitching in his hometown, and he wasn't going to let anybody down."

Pedro Alvarez and Jordy Mercer homered in the second inning of the Pirates' first game in Anaheim since 2007.

Jason Grilli pitched the ninth for his NL-leading 26th save.

Cole retired Los Angeles' first seven hitters before back-to-back singles by Hank Conger and Peter Bourjos in the third, but he escaped the jam and didn't allow another baserunner until the seventh.

The Angels finally got to Cole when Pujols led off with his 488th career homer off the fake rock pile in left-center field. That was the first major-league homer allowed by Cole, and he followed up by issuing his first career walk to Mark Trumbo.

Howie Kendrick then hit a liner back to the mound that hit Cole on the upper left thigh, but he stayed in the game.

"It's pretty sore," Cole said. "Got me right on the thigh. Good thing I've got fat legs."

The Angels finally chased Cole on Alberto Callaspo's RBI single, and the Anaheim crowd cheered the local kid on the way to the dugout.

Weaver hasn't been his usual dominant self in five starts since returning from a 45-day stint on the disabled list. After he gave up Alvarez's 17th homer to lead off the second inning, Mercer followed with a two-run shot, his fourth of the season.

"The last three starts it just kind of seems like there's one inning that's a blow-up inning, and I've just got to learn to stay away from that," Weaver said. "It's frustrating. I'm not doing a whole lot to help the team right now. I just have to keep battling, and hopefully things will turn around."

The Pirates added another run in the fourth when Bourjos, normally a spectacular fielder, lost track of Starling Marte's two-out fly to center. The ball landed well behind him for an RBI triple.

Josh Hamilton sat out with a sore right wrist, and the $125 million slugger isn't likely to start a game this weekend while the Angels give him some rest. Hamilton, who was available off the bench, was in a 3-for-26 skid in the first seven games of the Angels' homestand.

A small earthquake hit Peru at 1:40 p.m. local time Tuesday, just off the coast near Lima, Peru's capital city. No injuries or damage have been reported.?

A small (magnitude 4.6) earthquake hit Peru at 1:40 p.m. local time. The earthquake was located about 15 miles off the coast of Callao, Peru and about 38 miles underground. This picture came from the USGS website, earthquake.usgs.gov.

The earthquake shook buildings in Lima, Peru's capital city, but no injuries or damage have been reported, according to Reuters. A magnitude 4.6 earthquake can be felt, but rarely causes damage beyond clinking some glasses and knocking pictures askew.?Earthquakes of this size happen tens of thousands of times per year.

The earthquake's center was?about 22 miles northwest of Lima?and 38 miles (61 kilometers) underground.

Peru is located on the "Ring of Fire," the belt of earthquakes and volcanoes surrounding the Pacific Ocean. All along its western coast, the South American plate is colliding with the Nazca plate, forcing the heavier ocean crust down into the Earth's mantle. The collision of the plates is like a slow-motion car wreck. They're colliding at only 3 inches per year, but that's enough to cause frequent earthquakes ? and build the Andes Mountains.

The tectonically active region along the coast of South America, known to geologists as the South American arc, is more than 4,000 miles long, from just below the southern tip of Chile to just off the coast of Panama.?

This earthquake was one of the deepest that Peru is likely to experience. Shallower quakes, in the top 30 miles (50 km) of the crust, are due to the crunching of the South American plate as it crumples up the Andes. Earthquakes deeper than 40 miles (70 km) are rare in Peru, and mostly limited to the northern region of the country.

Today's earthquake, located about 38 miles below the surface, was probably along the interface between the Nazca and South American plates. This zone has produced?numerous magnitude 8 or larger earthquakes, many of which were followed by devastating tsunamis. The magnitude 9.5 earthquake that hit southern Chile in 1960, which remains the largest earthquake ever recorded, was one of these subduction zone-interface earthquakes.

You are asking a very good question.??

Have you and your spouse/partner put together a financial plan? (e.g. Do you have a savings strategy so you are saving monthly?? Savings plan for retirement? etc) ? A life plan for the next decade and longer?? (e.g. education, travel, kids or not, ? a dog or a horse or a hamster,? parents aging and needing help, employment evolving).?

The goal to have a house at some point is realistic, but where does it fit into the master plan?

Sometimes renting is better than buying.? Renting allows you to be more flexible; it allows you to build up a good solid financial cushion;? it allows you to explore life without the obligations of maintenance, mortgage payments etc (perhaps the Peace Corp beckons), perhaps classes at the university will lead to a job outside town and the house will be a burden.

The second part of the equation "buy a small inexpensive starter home".?? If you are thinking that would be okay for a few years, talk to a the hundreds of thousands of people who made that choice a few years ago and are now stuck owing more than the home is worth and with several kids.???? Don't buy a home unless you can see yourself living in it for at least 10 years.

There is no emergency to buy homes (many agents give a sense of urgency in their "buy now" messages).? In most parts of the country houses are not a super bargain.? As interest rates go up, house prices tend to go down.?
