Broncos' LB Von Miller faces four game suspension for violating NFL policy

Von Miller, the Denver Broncos? All-Pro linebacker, faces a four-game suspension for a still-unspecified violation of NFL policy. But the NFL Players Association is leading an appeal of the suspension, and Miller's status for the start of the regular season remains up in the air.

ESPN first reported the pending violation Monday morning, and the Denver Post later reported that Miller has been in the league testing program since a positive test for amphetamines and marijuana in his rookie year of 2011.

In a pair of tweets Monday afternoon, NFLPA spokesman George Atallah said, ?The NFLPA is working closely with (Miller) to appeal his suspension. We are all very disappointed that confidentiality was breached. I can also confirm that Von?s case does not involve the Steroids and Related Substances Policy.??

MORE: Iyer: Broncos' camp questions | Broncos camp preview

Miller himself had tweeted earlier Monday, ?Seeing reports abt 4 game susp. I know I did nothing wrong. I'm sure this'll be resolved fairly. Disapp. Broncos have 2 open camp like this."

The Broncos open camp on Wednesday. Their regular-season opener is a nationally-televised playoff rematch with the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in Denver on Thursday night September 5.

Miller, the second pick in the 2011 draft, has 30 sacks and forced nine fumbles in his first two seasons, and the Broncos reached the playoffs in each season.

Brandon Krisztal, a reporter for Denver radio station KKFN-FM 104.3, told ESPN?s SportsCenter Monday morning?and later posted on his Twitter account?that he had been told that Miller had tested positive for two recreational drugs.

Landmarks across the world were lit up overnight to welcome the arrival of Britain's future King.

The London Eye adopted a patriotic red, white and blue colouring, while the fountains in Trafalgar Square ran blue to signify that the Duchess of Cambridge had given birth to a baby boy.

Niagara Falls was also lit up in blue, providing a stunning spectacle for those who gathered to watch the famous waterfall on the U.S.-Canada border.

It was first announced that Kate and William's son had been born around 8.30 last night - allowing sights to Britain to light up in celebration as soon as dusk fell.

The BT tower in Fitzrovia, central London displayed a message broadcasting the news to Londoners as soon as it was revealed.

The London Eye, on the south bank of the Thames, was illuminated in red, white and blue throughout the night.

The iconic landmark stood out against the dramatic sky as thunderstorms flared above Britain.

Tower Bridge was another famous London sight which turned blue for the night to tell passers-by about the birth of a healthy 8lbs 6oz boy.

Trafalgar Square's fountains were lit with blue lights last night, and London mayor Boris Johnson said they will be lit for the next six days in celebration of the royal birth.

'Huge congratulations to the Duke and Duchess on the birth of their first child who will, by virtue of being born in this great city, be a Londoner through and through,' he said.

'I am sure millions of Londoners will be raising a glass today to toast this wonderful news.'

The public rejoicing at the birth of a new Prince, whose name has not yet been revealed, was not confined to the UK.

Other countries which share the British Royal family, such as Canada and New Zealand, also shared in the celebration of the historic moment.

Perhaps the most spectacular sight came at Niagara Falls, where lights were used to colour the whole waterfall blue for a boy.

(AP) ? Max Scherzer went right back to winning. Miguel Cabrera walked off the field.

Scherzer outpitched Chris Sale in a marquee matchup of All-Star starters to earn his 14th victory, and the Tigers overcame Cabrera's injury to beat the Chicago White Sox 7-3 on Monday night.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Cabrera was replaced at third base by Don Kelly. The 2012 AL MVP, who appeared to be holding his left side as he headed to the dugout, was removed with a sore hip flexor muscle and will be evaluated Tuesday.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland said the Tigers are going to "wait and see" on Cabrera's condition.

"You know what? If he's got to miss a few games, he's got to miss a few games, and we find out how tough we are," Leyland said.

Cabrera, who became baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years last season, has played in 97 of Detroit's 98 games this year. He began the day leading the AL with a .359 batting average and 96 RBIs.

After scoring from second in the top of the fifth on Victor Martinez's single, Cabrera tried to loosen up his side. He wasn't able to do it, so he left the game.

"It (felt) weird," Cabrera said.

Without Cabrera, the Tigers still had more than enough to beat Chicago, which gave up five unearned runs.

Scherzer (14-1) won his first 13 decisions before losing his last outing before he started the All-Star game for the American League last Tuesday night at Citi Field. He went eight innings Monday and allowed four hits while striking out five.

The right-hander, who didn't allow a baserunner until Adam Dunn's single with one out in the fifth, increased his strikeout total to 157. The only two runs Scherzer gave up came on solo homers by Dayan Viciedo and Conor Gillaspie.

Scherzer also knew what kind of challenge he faced in Sale.

"You know every time when Sale's on the mound, he's one of the best. You've got to bring your A game if you're going to have a chance," Scherzer said. "Tonight I thought I pitched the ball very well, but I also could have lost. At the same time, my teammates had a good idea of what they wanted to do."

Martinez had four hits to raise his July average to .425 and Torii Hunter homered in the seventh for Detroit, which improved to 43-9 when scoring five or more runs.

That offense, though, might not be the same if Cabrera is out for a little while.

"If Miggy comes out of a game he's definitely in pain, but Miggy's one of those guys, he's tough. He won't be out long," Hunter said. "I definitely think if you need to rest him a little bit, a couple days, I guess we have to do that. We need him for the long run. If it takes a couple days for him to get where he needs to be, I think we should do it."

Even with Sale pitching, the White Sox were far from where they needed to be Monday.

Sale followed Scherzer to the mound in the All-Star game and worked two scoreless innings. This time, the left-hander pitched eight innings and gave up four runs ? two earned. He yielded seven hits while striking out 11.

Sale (6-9) has struck out at least 10 five times this season.

The Tigers scored two unearned runs in the fifth to make it 3-0 when Martinez singled with two outs, bringing in Hernan Perez and Cabrera. Perez led off the inning with a routine grounder to shortstop, but Alexei Ramirez misplayed it for the first of his two errors.

After retiring Austin Jackson and Hunter, Sale walked Cabrera intentionally and then Fielder to load the bases for Martinez. Sale was visibly upset with the decision to walk Cabrera.

"I like people to earn their way on base," Sale said. "That's about it."

Chicago, which was trying to win three straight games for the first time since June 8-10, fell to 11-20 against AL Central teams. The White Sox allowed five unearned runs and made three more errors to reach 64 after committing 70 last year.

"It's going to happen every once in a while," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "You hope this one, even in the second half, is one of those every-once-in-a-whiles."

NOTES: Leyland said it "might be wishful thinking" that Detroit 2B Omar Infante (left ankle) could be back by the weekend. Infante has been on the disabled list since July 4. ... Paul Konerko, activated from the 15-day DL following a lower back strain, was the White Sox designated hitter and went 0 for 3 in his first game since July 2. ... White Sox RHP Jake Peavy said the trade speculation surrounding him "is not something that consumes any bit of my thought process." Peavy does not have trade protection in the two-year contract he signed this offseason. ... Tuesday's pitching matchup is Detroit's Rick Porcello (6-6, 4.80 ERA) against Chicago's Hector Santiago (3-5, 3.30).

Samsung, FBI reportedly near deal for Galaxy devices

The FBI reportedly is near a deal with Samsung for it to supply Galaxy devices to the agency.

When an FBI agent flashes an ID at a crime scene in the near future, a Samsung Galaxy smartphone might be in the other hand.

Reuters reported that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is close to a deal with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to sell the agency its line of Galaxy devices. The FBI presently uses mostly BlackBerry devices for its 35,000 employees and Reuters said a deal would be a boost to Samsung's goal of catering to more government agencies.

Samsung's U.S. arm, Samsung Telecommunications America is in Richardson, while BlackBerry's U.S. headquarters is in Irving.

Baseball Trivia Quiz

While cleaning out the garage, I found some Major League Baseball trivia books from which I adapt the following quiz. Google not and see how many of these you can get right:

1. No player has hit .400 since major league baseball extended the length of the season from 154 to 162 games. Who was the last player to hit .400 over 154 games?

2. On the final day of the 1910 season, Cleveland?s Nap Lajoie was in second place in the American League batting race. The St. Louis Browns gave him some help by placing their fielders in the wrong positions and ?losing fly balls in the sun?. LaJoie benefited with 8 ?hits? in the doubleheader. The Browns assisted Lajoie because everybody hated the guy who was leading the batting race. Who was he?

3. Lajoie had the highest batting average in the league that year, but did not win the batting title. Why not?

4. The legendary Bob Feller pitched his first no hitter in 1940. What was his ERA at the end of the game?

5. Hitting for the cycle is an extremely rare feat and only one player in history accomplished it three times across two leagues. Who was he? Hint: Think of a word people might use for an infant, and, the father of the Munster family.

6. In 1973, Yankee Ron Blomberg drew a bases-loaded walk off of Luis Tiant and thereby made baseball history. How?

7. In 1979, Atlanta Braves pitcher Phil Niekro led the league in wins with 21. Who led the league in losses?

8. Los Angeles was a hitter?s nightmare in the early 1960s. Don Drysdale won the Cy Young Award in 1962 and his teammate Sandy Koufax won in 1963 and again in 1965 and 1966. What L.A. pitcher won in 1964?

9. Bob Gibson had perhaps the most dominant performance by a pitcher in world series history in 1967, when he pitched three complete game victories, giving up only 3 runs in total and netting 26 strikeouts. Yet he only won 13 games during the 1967 season. Why?

10. Knuckleballer Ed Rommel once gave up 29 hits in a game but won anyway, but if he is remembered at all it is because of something he introduced to baseball after his playing days ended. What was it?

Answers after the jump

1. Wade Boggs, who did it from June 1985 to June 1986 (note that I said over 154 games, not over a 154-game season). Incidentally he also hit .400 over 162 games.

2. Ty Cobb.

3. One of Ty Cobb?s games, in which he went 2 for 3, was erroneously counted twice in the season-ending statistics. The error was not caught until many years later, and the league decided not to make Lajoie the 1910 official batting champ even though between the statistical error and his final day?s ?hitting performance? he had the highest average for the season.

4. Zero ? it was opening day.

5. Babe Herman (No, not George Herman ?Babe? Ruth; he never hit for the cycle).

6. By being the first designated hitter to drive in a run. The position was new that year and it was opening day.

7. Phil Niekro, with 20. What a workhorse!

8. Dean Chance of the Los Angeles Angels.

9. Not long after the All-Star game, Roberto Clemente hit a line drive that fractured Gibson?s leg, leading him to miss almost the entire second half of the regular season. Incredibly, he kept pitching after his leg was fractured until it snapped completely. Do not mess with Bob Gibson!

10. He became an umpire and was the first one to wear glasses (though surely not the first to have people scream that he needed them).

If you got 5 or more correct, I for one will be impressed. Please post your score below.

Mayor Bloomberg to NYC: Take the stairs

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg escalated his fight against obesity Wednesday when he encouraged New Yorkers to skip the elevator and take the stairs.

According to the New York Observer, the NYC mayor ? whose stand against large sugary sodas has earned him the nickname ?Nanny Bloomberg? ? is now mandating that NYC architects design buildings promoting increased activity levels.

At a press conference at The New School in NYC, Bloomberg announced his executive order ?requiring all City agencies to use active design strategies when performing all new construction and major renovation projects.?

?Exercise is good for you,? Bloomberg told New Yorkers.

Additionally, the mayor plans to send the city council two pieces of legislation promoting stair use. One proposed bill ?requires that building owners give occupants access to at least one, clearly identified stairway in the building; and post signs that prompt stair use near elevators.?

The second proposal would enforce increased ?access to and the visibility of stairways by permitting the use of hold-open devices in the doors of one stairway per building, for a maximum of three consecutive floors.?

The nonprofit organization Center for Active Design, which is partially funded by the city, will take on the task of ?finding ways to design healthier buildings, promote public transit and create more inviting outdoor spaces for activity.?

In a press release, Design Commissioner David Burney told the crowd that architects must play a role in fighting the obesity epidemic.

?The active design movement asks design professionals to be part of the solution and find new ways to encourage movement, both in buildings and on the streets,? his statement said.

Bloomberg told NYC residents that he plans to make fitness more socially acceptable.

?What we?ve got to do is just make it cool ? if you will ? or socially more the norm to exercise, and that?s what you see here,? he said.

The mayor told the crowd that he almost never takes the elevator and does not stand still when using the escalator.

Over his three terms, Bloomberg also passed a ban on outdoor smoking, supported a one-cent tax on sodas, campaigned against school bake sales and created a program discouraging salt consumption.
